Congress debates Hip Hop
Sunday, 23, September
On Septemner 25, Congress had a hearing about Hip Hop. The heads of record labels and TV networks will be held accountable for "degrading images" of black women. Are we finally being accounted for, or is this just a way to create government sanctioned censorship on our art form?

let's hold the corporations accountable and let the artists keep doing their thing.

i think this is a inevitable turn of events, because there's been a watchful eye on the form since the "hip hop police" have been discovered and exposed. it is blessing and a curse in disguise in the sense that we have a unique opportunity to express our issues on the matter in the way that will have the most impact for future generations

THIS IS WHAT JA RULE SAID

They got my man Doug Morris under fire and @#!*, they got him going down to go speak to Congress about hip-hop lyrics, are you @#*$ing serious?"
"There's a f--king black kid right now about to get 25 years for having a fight with some white kids over hanging the nooses over the white tree, let's get to that. Let's get into sh-t like that, because that's what's tearing up America, not me calling a woman a b--ch or a h-e on my rap songs.

i think we have the ability to address multiple issues at one time. yes, we have to address what's happening in jena, and the enviornment, and foreign policy, but we also have to address misogyny, not just in hip hop but in all music. maybe this will be a start.

the government should refrain from any intervention with hip hop music. why is it any different or not afforded the same freedome of expression as other art forms?!

i DO think hip hop should be talked about/criticized, but i have to agree with JA (it must be a blue moon), how come we aren't talking about jena 6...racism in this country is borne from slavery and we refuse to look at the roots.

Honestly, I think as women of color, we have always struggled. We are either invisible, or we are viewed as objects. It's not the job of Congress, or Hip Hop or even our men to see us differently, it's about shining ourselves. No one can help you, you just gotta SHINESHINESHINESHINE-

HERE IS ANOTHER GEM FROM JA:

"...lets talk about all these f--king shows that they have on MTV that is promoting homosexuality, that my kids can't watch this sh-t..if that's not f--king up America, I don't know what is."

In some ways this seems like a positive step...but lets face it - hip-hop is not the only aspect of our culture that promotes and uses degrading images of women, especially black women. We (and by extension Congress) need to examine our own attitudes and response to sexist imagery in general - and pay particular attention to how the popular media, as well as underground culture views sisters. Censorship of popular expression, especially around provocative and titilating imagry is fairly ineffective - let's work on increasing our society's respect for women - instead of focusing on hip-hop alone, which is only one manifestation of our culture's attitudes. hip hop does not *heart* congress. government does not *heart* brown people. so it's is bad news bears when they get in bed together. i *heart* hip hop. i *heart* freedom of expression.

Speaking of freedom of expression, I saw Mr. Ahmadinejad's speech today. Not to get off topic, but it seems to me that we only have "Freedom of Expression" when it's convenient to do so (ie when the Government and the mass media agree). I love Hip Hop, and at first I was excited to think that Congress takes Black Women seriously enough to create a Hearing about racism and sexism. But I fear it is a slippery slope. What seems like concern is actually a way to further control a culture that came from OUR streets and has rattled way too fast out of control, like when you lose control of the steering wheel of your hoopdi and you got no brakes. Hip Hop IS flying out of control, but it's not the job of Congress...that's our job!

I'm not too worried about censorship, but what's more revealing is the apparent perception that we need government policing and intervening because we've done such a bad job handling ourselves. Why do we need Congress to arbitrate what's right/wrong, good/bad in our behavior, when we should know better. We can pretend that this is about freedom of speech, but that's a trap. It's really about our self-respect, that even Congress recognizes is lacking. We should all be ashamed.

Are we serious? How's about Congress hold a Serious hearing on the variety of issues that have been thrusted upon the HIp-Hop communities since the 70's? How's about Congress hold a Serious hearing about the effects of reaganomics on black communities? Can we at least have Congress hold a Serious hearing on it's allowing of the Contras to fund murder in foreign countries? I wonder how the sons and daughters of political prisoners or dead freedom fighters My biggest frustration with this conversation is the lack of context, real experts with genuine analysis and/or even an inkling of true effort to really explore what Hip-Hop should and shouldn't be held accountable for. Are we serious? How long has the hearing on restorative justice rights been on the table floor, waiting for a hearing date? Another thing, there are countless amounts of hearings that are extremely important to the community. Why is this one the most talked about? Is it because Hip-Hop is at stake? Hip-Hop isn't at stake! Those hearings were had years ago, when many of use lolly gagged with the opportunity to really reinvest in our communities. Those hearings are had every day on the street when an aspiring artists is faced with the conversation of Kanye vs. 50 Cent. Are we seriously still having this conversation? Who will represent the voice of the the "degraded black woman" during the hearings? Will it be Queen Latifah, Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte, Martha Diaz, Sophia Quintero, who? Will it be a white man from Omaha, Nebraska or better, a black Man from Washington D.C? I am working towards the day when we can afford to send our own voices to these hearings, or at least influence who represents the community voice. Are we seriously still having this conversation?

I believe that the heads of record labelos and TV networks need to be held accountable for these "degrading images," but I have no faith in Congress holding them accountable. These "degrading images" have been around for centuries, and not just in hip-hop. Movies, lyrics, and art that have been deemed "high class entertainment" can be just as degrading. WHy should Congress take a stand now?? Instead of COngress I think the listeners need to hold the hip-hop community accountable. If you dont like what an artist is saying, dont listen, dont buy the music, and see if your community feels the same way. Why should congress dictate what is considered art and what is considered degrading?

i think all awareness is good. people talking and thinking about hip hop - about this art form & what it means - about what IS degrading, what IS self expression, what DO we want is GOOD. and frankly I just hope more WOMEN START DOIGN MORE THEMSELVES - I love listening to women hip hop artists - they give me hope & inspiration...

If Congress is going to become the "image police" it should not limit itself to Hip Hop. It should also address Hollywood which has been the greatest producer of white racist images in history. In fact it is black self-hatred that is cultivated by white racism that underlies that pathology in Hip Hop.

i think that the rap industry is disgusting. all the ceo's don't want to change becuase everyone buys into it. what people need to do is start thinking for themselves and stop letting people define what is or isn't cool. people copy cat rap music, images and messages instead of inventing their own ideas. it is boring.

I am no expert on hip hop, but you'd have to be living under a rock not to be innunated by imagery almost constantly. I must admit, as a man, sexual imagery in hip hop pushes a few trigger buttons. On the one hand, women are beautiful and they should be able to express their sexuality or style or whatever. But commerical hip hop is trying to sell a lifestyle, which seems to celebrate a detachment, materialism, and sex centrism. The aesthetic conditioning that accompanies this sales job is what I find offensive. This imagery actually becomes part of your fantasies, even if you don't want them there. What is infuriating is the corporate colonization of our own mindspace. Hip hop is but one sad example of this. I really don't have any answers, since this it was this forum that forced my to think about it seriously.

you know what, i'm actually ECSTATIC Congress is stepping in. sure, there's horrible imagery in hollywood of materialistic, plastic white women. paris, lindsey the hills make white chicks look bad. but the reality IS this country, as patriarchal as it is, will always VALUE white women--whether they are princesses or hoes. i honestly don't mind there being censorship in hiphop because as a black woman in this country, i am told everyday by the tube just what my own society thinks of me. and it ain't much--because between the little represenation we get, most of it is very very bad. and you know what's worse, hip-hop and other medias where black people *seem* to have control are giving PERMISSION to the imus and the corporate EVP's to keep sullying the image of black women. did you know that Flavor of Love (that's part of the hip-hop industry too) has recently been sold to MTV Denmark and Germany? so now when i want to get my travel on, i have to fight this kind of bs even more. and you know i get it: we need to understand what's theoretically at stake--the fact that there's worse going on, the fact that this is a question of censorship, yada--but the fact is we a) we can multi-task and b) can anyone tell me what can be gained from being called a bitch or a hoe by some illiterate drug dealer/platinum slave? we need to stop embracing this disgusting, exoticization of our women as if it's something that has come from our culture or our so called streets. IT HAS NOT. my Black culture--northern, southern, diasporic a like--respects and revears black women both in and outside the domestic landscape. what's in these videos are a clear indication of corporate greed (at the label level and at the artistic level) and how low our own expectations of our art. so goddamnit, yes let the damn wigs from DC decide what's obscene and what isn't and get this thing under control. grr.***NK

if you think congress can fix anything having to do with hip-hop you're deluded.. mainstream hip-hop is run by the industry and it is a product like mc lyte said.. hip-hop is alive and well but if all you listen to is radio or if all you do is watch TV's take on hip-hop then you are the one that needs fixing.. make a shift and support local hip-hop events.. local hip-hop artists.. local and national events that promote artists.. and international gatherings connected to the elements and connect with those entities pushing the artforms forward to new realms..such as education or theater.. how many of you can name any of the Top contenders of the Lockers, Breakers, DJ's, Graf writers, MC's scenes??? not too many.. you are too ADDICTED to what TV is feeding you.. there is a whole other world out there speakin truth to power thru Hip-hop.. man and woman alike.. Hip-hop is still challenging society...but you'll never hear or see it unless you make the shift.. unplug yourself from the madness and reconnect to the hip-hop nation.. this was never about congress or record labels..or hollywood..

I think the inspiring thing about the Congressional Hearing is that they are addressing black WOMEN. For many years, activists have had to choose: are we going to fight racism or fight sexism. This has caused a huge rift among us. Feminists of color are seen as traitors, and the mainstream (people, press, organizations) have found it too damn overwhelming to address both at the same time. This leaves women of color, especially black women, more vulnerable and more invisible. Because we either have to blindly follow the brothers, or step outside the paradigm entirely. I applaud Congress for at least taking a step towards recognizing the problem. But my question is, will anything (besides a nice press opp) really change after today?
